Zakari Mohamed, 30, was arrested on Saturday «after a major assault by security forces against the activities of the group» in the forest Balmo in Bauchi State says police statement.
Zakari participated «in the recent slaughter of seven people, including women and children,» the statement said.
According to police, Balmo forest is one of the many operational bases from which the militant group launches its deadliest attacks in the northeast. Islamist violence has left more than 10,000 dead in Nigeria in five years.
Bauchi State is one of the most shaken by the uprising.
To Zakari is not known as one of the Islamist leaders in Nigeria, but Boko Haram is a very fractured, with autonomous cells, which surely have their own group leaders.
Boko Haram, which claimed the creation of an Islamic state in northern Nigeria, mainly Muslim, is led by Abubakar Shekau, considered a terrorist by the United States climbing world.
